Medicare Supplement Insurance for Veterans

Help selecting Medicare Supplement plans to cover gaps in your original Medicare coverage. Find the right plan that works with your VA benefits.

What is Medicare Supplement (Medigap)?

Medicare Supplement insurance, also known as Medigap, helps pay for some of the healthcare costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans are sold by private insurance companies and work alongside your Original Medicare coverage.

Important: Medigap policies only work with Original Medicare. You cannot use a Medigap policy with a Medicare Advantage plan. If you have a Medigap policy and join a Medicare Advantage plan, you may want to drop your Medigap policy.

Enrollment Information

When Can You Enroll?

Medigap Open Enrollment Period

The best time to buy a Medigap policy is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This 6-month period begins the month you're 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, you have guaranteed issue rights, meaning insurance companies can't deny you coverage or charge you more due to pre-existing conditions.

After Open Enrollment

You can still buy a Medigap policy after your Open Enrollment Period, but you may be subject to medical underwriting, which could result in higher premiums or denial of coverage.

Important: If you're under 65 and have Medicare due to disability, you may not be able to buy a Medigap policy, or you may pay more. Check with your state insurance department for availability and rules.
